Baby Shower

I even have a balloon blower!

We are having a baby shower this weekend - I even got a balloon blower ready. I’m so freaking excited about this.

It’s one of the 1st little celebrations of something pretty significant changing in our lives - this time with our friends.

The only other time Jay & I had a party of sorts, was our engagement dinner that my mom originally said a few people would join. That ended up being a 70 person dinner in the mountain ranges in Melbourne with lobster hehe.

We loved it but this time we are doing something for us in our current home city - CDMX / Mexico City.

While we were in Italy last month, we didnt visit Venice, we didnt have Aperol on the beach haha - We were spending time with family & visiting little baby stores.

It was the first time we recieved little gifts for the baby.

It was in those moments - where the socks are tiny and your hearts melting - That’s when I truly felt like this was real - I’m having a baby.

I am actually about to become a mom - it feels so odd to say that. I spent most of my late 20’s thinking and believing that I would not find a partner & that I might grow old without children, but here I am.

So I got educated - I am not the kind of person who can read a book to prep myself for this experience, I prefer to learn from converstaions of others who have done this before and plus - no book, no strategy is going to prepare me for what will happen - it just will & I can only be so excited for his arrival, whichever pain/way/time he is going to come.

That is a very vague way of saying that I dont think there’s any point trying to control my birth plan. As long as he is healthy - thats all that matters.

I also got the best advice from our mom friend Janet, who could have had her baby in Canada, or in the UK, but still chose CDMX - She said to not over-do the preparation. Take it easy - don’t get things that you dont need.

I want to be somewhat of a minimalist in this - I dont want to have an excess of baby things that were made just for consumers. Wow is there a lot of that on the market. It’s kinda easy to get lost in it all because you have so many options & things they’ve created.

This one is up for debate:

  • a Diaper pail - this is a bin for poop, that btw, retails here at least for about $!00 usd. There’s certain products like a stroller that have a use time & important that I can understand why they range out till past $1K but a poo bin? And its very specific bags that can be reused that set you back $20 each time? Arguably something I keep going back on forth on beause you can just take out the trash.

I’m still impressed with the kind of products the market has managed to rebrand as baby spefiic. No wonder why when going into ecomm, they always said baby products is a leading category.

So in preparation - I created a check list of actual items we would need - a baby bed, a changing station etc. This was much easier in the form of a registry on Amazon but before even sharing this out. I probably cleaned up about half of it, maybe more.

I think I’m slightly addicted to this baby flipping product project.

I targeted items that I found 2nd hand options in the marketplace or the garage sales of the many familys leaving Mexico city for Europe! I’ve also gotten a lot of things from random stranger moms who were just clearing space - I ended up with donated clothes, a baby gym, wiper warmer, rocking chair and even diapers! And I’ve actually donated on to other upcoming moms and met & connected with them too. Which is super cute with our little bumps.

I’m a bit sad that within the last 2-3 weeks I have basically everything. I blame Tiktok too - for showing me all the cute nurseries with organizational carts that all the 30-something week pregnagnt people are making. I had to have my own - I was 100% influenced.

It’s so cute.

The shower is on Saturday and we had some of our internation friends send in little notes of encouragement - ones we could put on diapers when we need it.
