Pivotal Point Between London & Mexico. (Written in 2020)

This is how I’ve now been a nomad for 10 years, how I finally left London, somehow escaped the lockdowns in Aus & ended up in MX. 😂

In 2019, traveling started to feel more exhausting than exhilarating, and I knew I wanted more stability. I moved back to Australia and declared myself a “retired globetrotter.”

But then an opportunity presented itself to me: a business contract that would pay for my flight to Austin, TX and partake in the largest business, music tech conference in the world, SXSW.

I couldn’t say no. When opportunities come my way, I take them with an open heart. When I set out to do something, I get it done. I prepared to leave, flew to Austin, and then covid hit.

As the pandemic reached Austin, SXSW was cancelled, and this self-proclaimed retired globetrotter was locked down in a new city. I could’ve felt stuck, ruminating over how lonely or stressful the lockdown was. But I turned all of my pent-up energy into action.

I didn’t let fear hold me back, daring to think bigger than where I was standing.

After all, taking chances, like flying to Austin, led me to where I am today: in Mexico, surrounded by creatives.

I won’t take these opportunities for granted. I feel so aligned with the life and business I manifested. Now, my ideal day consists of:

  1. Starting my day with mindfulness

  2. Brain dumping all over my journal and/or whiteboard

  3. Communicating and managing my team - not getting lost in the weeds and finding time to work on my business.

  4. Finding some time to learn Spanish

  5. Finding a rooftop or beach for sunset.

I’ve created my own freedom: I am where I belong, community-building with ambitious entrepreneurs and creatives. And I’m chasing my own version of success every step of the way.

Now, I’m working remotely full-time. I earn double, almost triple, more than I would ever earn in Australia - even with that 6-figure salary I left. What that shows me is I truly needed to believe in myself and my ability to create strong and fulfilling connections in order to thrive.

I’m finding that a lot of my happiness comes from living in an expat community, surrounded by people who understand my struggles and ambitions. Even though I’m in Mexico, I’m learning that no matter the place - your community can boost you further than any big name project. Your community helps you continue to thrive.

Looking back, I see now that London was my comfort zone. I stuck to London, even taking contracts with big agencies, just because I felt like I needed more money before starting my own business. In hindsight, the only reason I needed more was because the cost of living in London is so ridiculously high.

You don’t need to stay in the same place in order to start building your business. You can work for yourself, surrounded by your community and doing projects that bring you joy, and still make lots of money. Trust in yourself - your success starts with your beliefs.
